Next Meeting:-
7.30pm, Tuesday 6th April, 2010."World War II Wireless Intercept and Secret Stations"
By Stan Ames G4OAV.
Stan will describe the development of the network of secret wireless stations that intercepted enemy transmissions during WWII and subsequently decrypted at Bletchley Park.
The story begins with a Post Office radio station at St Albans that was secretly reporting German wireless traffic to the Foreign Office in 1932. By the end of 1938, the military authorities asked the Post Office to set up a network of eavesdropping stations – the first of which was built at Sandridge near St Albans.
The work of Bletchley Park is well understood but little is understood about the how the raw intelligence was collected. This presentation describes the growth of wireless intelligence in WWII and the networks of secret wireless intercept stations and direction finding stations around Britain.
The three Armed services each built their own networks but more secret still were those operated by the Foreign Office and MI5 & MI6 who successfully tapped directly into the highest levels of German Secret Service communications.
Radio amateurs played an important role in this work and a number of key installations in and around Chelmsford also played an important role.
Come to CARS Meeting and hear this intriguing story first hand.

National Club of the Year Competition
Following the successful Region 4 Club of the Year competition last year, the RSGB has launched the Competition nationwide. The competition will start with the Regional heats and the winning club from each of the 13 RSGB regions will then move forward to the national competition. The regional finals will take place in January 2010 and the National contest will be judged in March 2010. The winning club will receive their prize and trophy at the RSGB AGM in April 2010.
Regional winners will receive their trophy and prize at a suitable event within their Region.
• The competition is open to any RSGB affiliated group, club or society.
• Entry to the competition is free
• The award is not open to individual radio amateurs.
• Full details and terms and conditions and closing dates for regional entries can be found on the individual regional websites by going to www.rsgb.org and clicking on local information.
• Regional finalists will be judged by the RSGB regional teams. National finalists will be judged by a national panel. What are we looking for in the region or national club of the year?
We are not looking for the biggest club; or the smallest club, we are looking for the club that promotes the very best that is the hobby of amateur radio. Be it training, special events, support of the local community, charitable events, public relations, contesting. What ever your club gets involved in throughout the year goes towards being voted the National or Regional Club of the Year.
